Empowering the Lotus House
Lotus House
Lotus House's mission is to improve the lives of women and children experiencing homelessness by providing sanctuary, support, education, tools and resources that empower them to improve the quality of their lives on every level, achieve greater self sufficiency, and build safe, secure lives.
For the past two years, Chromat hosted free weekly sewing workshops for residents at Lotus House Women’s Shelter in Overtown, Miami. This year's sessions culminated in a runway show and photoshoot where LH guests modeled some self-styled Chromat looks along with their own upcycled garments!
In the newest Lotus Village Voices podcast, Chromat founder Becca McCharen-Tran discusses Chromat's philosophy and how it intersects with Lotus House's mission of empowerment, the importance of community, creative activism and inclusivity.
Class participants learned about sustainable upcycling using materials from the Lotus House Thrift Store in Wynwood and donated Chromat fabrics. They honed their sewing and fashion design skills with weekly activities: making tote bags from button-up dress shirts, upcycling t shirts into cute wraps and adding drawstring details, dying textiles, fashion sketching, bikini making and more!
Thank you to Agua Dulce, Andrea Rodriguez and Arkedabar for co-facilitating the workshops.
